Deserted Athens Olympic Sports Complex

Originally built in the early 1980s, the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens
"Spiros Louis" was renamed Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) and
received it's biggest renovation for the 2004 summer Olympics by famed
architect Santiago Calatrava. Like most of Calatrava’s work, the
OAKA is stunning and graceful — but today is in a state of
dereliction and disrepair.

It hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1991, the World Championship in
Athletics in 1997 as well as other important athletic and cultural
events. The most significant event it has hosted, was the Athens
Olympic Games in 2004. Today, the complex as a whole is empty and
unkempt. The velodrome's soaring arches contrasted against rusting
pools, broken fountains, and weed-filled stadiums all sprawling
out over 96 hectares.
