Jotenji Zen Temple

Jotenji temple, founded in 1241, is a beautiful Zen temple located near Hakata,
the heart of busy Fukuoka, Japan. It features a Buddhist Zen garden which
offers peace and tranquility. Not usually open to the public, this Zen
garden can be seen from the opposite garden or avenue outside.

Before Zen's introduction to Japan, Buddhism has a long history in Japan since

in China, promoted meditation and discipline as the means to enlightenment
and became very popular with the samurai class who has political power.

Aso Volcano

Aso is an active volcano in Central Kyushu and has produced more explosive
eruptions than any other volcano in the world. Aso is a caldera about 12
miles (20 km) in diameter. Of the numerous stratovolcanoes and cinder cones
inside the caldera, only Naka-dake has been active in historic time.

The first documented eruption in Japan was at Naka-dake in 553 AD. Since then,
Naka-dake has erupted 167 times. The most recent eruption ended in 1993.
Access to the caldera was temporarily stopped today when toxic gases were
spewed. Luckily, safe access was restored when wind direction changed.

Nagasaki Peace Statue

The 10-tonne bronze Nagasaki Peace Statue, designed by Kitamura Selbo, commands
over the Peace Park. It is not only a stark reminder of the devastation that
befell this city after the detonation of an atomic bomb during last days of
World War II on 9 August 1945 but also a dedication to the victims and a
cry-out for world peace. Are the politicians in Tokyo listening to the people?

Takachiho Gorge

The magnificient Takachiho Gorge, with spectacular sheer walls, waterfalls and
overhanging rocks, were formed after double eruptions of the Mt Aso volcano
over 120,000 years ago. The formation of columnar jointing is due to the rapid
cooling of an ancient lava flow that filled the narrow valley of Gokase River.

The Takachiho Gorge was designated a National Scenic and Natural
Monument on 10 November 1934.

Legislator Eddie Chu Barred from Village Election on Shaky Grounds

Legislator Eddie Chu Hoi-dick was disqualified from running for a local village's
representative. Returning officer Enoch Yuen Ka-lok pointed to Chu's 'implicit'
stance on Hong Kong independence and said the lawmaker had dodged his questions
on his political beliefs, implying that Chu supports Hong Kong independence.

Former HKU law dean Johannes Chan does not believe election officer can
provide 'cogent, clear and compelling' evidence for disqualification.
Eric Cheung, HKU law professor, says the reasons given for Chu's
disqualification were weak and Hong Kong courts must clarify
the vagueness in election laws.

Chu won with a record 84,121 votes in the 2016 Legislative Council election.
Critics cite the ban as another instance of civil rights being eroded in
the China-ruled city. The move against Chu adds to a list of other
democrats who have been banned from contesting elections,
fueling fears of tightening political 'red lines' by Beijing.

Homework Time for China's 'Low-end Population'
(Finalist for Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize 2018)

13 year-old deaf-mute students Chang Jingjing and Huo Xun do their homework
using folding chairs as makeshift tables outside their tiny room, which is
too small for a table. They are daughters of migrant workers and neighbours
of the Liang family in Shahe, a shanty town outside Beijing.

Tens of thousands of migrant workers, deemed 'low-end population' by the
Chinese government, were forcefully evicted from Beijing, Shanghai and
Shenzhen, etc in Nov 2017. These raised concerns that the government
discriminate against them after doing the dirtiest jobs to build up the
mega cities. Over 100 Chinese intellectuals signed a condemning petition.

China's 'Low-end Population' Doing the Dirtiest Jobs
(Finalist for Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize 2018)

40 year-old migrant Liang Chengsou from Sichuan works underground on the

are the unsung heroes left behind by China's economic miracle. They end
up doing the most 'dirty, heavy, hard and exhausting' jobs that the locals
mostly avoid in the cities.
