Umbrella Movement 4 Years On

Leaders of Umbrella Movement, including Joshua Wong and Professor
Chan Kin-man, and key activists stand at attention silently for 3 minutes
at 5:58 pm, when the first of 87 canisters of tear gas was launched by
the police 4 years ago that ignited the mass protest movement.

On 28 September 28 2014, tens of thousands of protesters demanding universal
suffrage and democracy took to the streets of Hong Kong. The Umbrella Movement -
so called because demonstrators carried umbrellas to shield themselves
from police pepper spray - would take over the main street in the city centre.
A seminal event for Hong Kong that lasted 79 days and drew over 100,000 people.

Protest over Controversial High Speed Rail Launch

Democrat legislators and activists rally to protest over the launch of
controversial High Speed Rail to Mainland China. In 2007 it was budgeted
to cost HK$39bn (US$5bn) and open in 2012; now it is expected to open
on 23 Sep 2018, 6 years behind schedule and cost more than doubled to
HK$84.4bn (US$10.7bn), the most expensive HSR in the world.

The most controversial issue is the co-location checkpoint at the new West
Kowloon station inside Hong Kong where passengers will be cleared under
Mainland Chinese laws. Critics, including the Hong Kong Bar Association,
consider this as a breach of the Basic Law, Hong Kong's mini-constitution
that provides a high degree of autonomy under the 'one country, two systems'.
