Decorated Boat Cruise

Brightly painted and decorated trajineras (a traditional
flat-bottomed boat) cruise around the 170 km (110 mi)
of canals of Xochimilco, lined with gardens and
curtains of trees.

Declared a World Heritage Site since 1987, Xochimilco
is one of the 16 mayoralities (Spanish: alcaldías)
or boroughs within Mexico City.

Old and New

La Torre Latinoamericana (Latin-American Tower), a skyscraper
at 188 m and 44 stories in downtown Mexico City, soars above
Palacio de Mineria (Palace of Mining), one of the masterpieces
of Neoclassical architecture in the Americas, built between 1797
and 1813 by Spanish sculptor and architect Manuel Tolsá.

Antique Dealer Jose

75-year-old Jose, an antique shop owner in Coatepec,
proudly shows-off his collection of antique sewing
machines to the curious passers-by.

Coatepec is a magic town located in the eastern slopes
of the Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak at 5611 m,
and Cofre de Perote volcanoes in Veracruz.

Puebla Catedral

Puebla Catedral is Mexico's tallest, at 69 metre. The
impressive cathedral occupies the entire block south
of the Zocalo and appeared on the old Mexico 500 Peso
bill. Construction began in 1575 and its architecture
is a blend of severe Herreresque-Renaissance and early
baroque style.

Palacio Nacional

Palacio Nacional (National Palace) is the home to the offices
of the President of Mexico and the Federal Treasury. The
grandiose palace also houses the Diego Rivera murals that
depict Mexican civilisation from the arrival of Quetzalcoatl
(the Aztec plumed serpent god) to post-revolution, painted
from 1929 to 1951.

Occupy Leaders Face Overkill Charges

Prosecutors are accused of 'overkill' charges against the
three initiators of the Occupy/Umbrella Movement at a
pre-trial hearing at the Cheung Sha Wan court.

The defense states that the charge 'incitement to incite public
nuisance' which targeted 8 of the 9 defendants including Occupy
trio Benny Tai, Chan Kin-man and Chu Yiu-ming, overlapped the
'incitement to commit public nuisance' charge is 'strange'
and possibly unconstitutional.

Yellow Umbrella/Parasol

The Yellow Umbrella/Parasol, by Chinese artist Shen Yuan,
is an art installation spread over four table made up of
miniature yellow umbrellas, barricades, tents and
makeshift furniture – symbolic of the Occupy Protests
for universal suffrage of 2014.

Shen, based in Paris, explores the changeability of urban
space and the pervasive crises that lie beneath apparent calm.

Part of the exibition 'Hong Kong Foot' (aka athlete’s foot),
a symbol of how the city has the power to infect visitors
and residents alike with Hong Kong characteristics, at
Tang Contemporary Art gallery through 27 January.

Police Standoff with Protesters as Thousands Return to Civic Square

10,000 march on New Year Day to protest the controversial joint
checkpoint plan for the high-speed rail station at West Kowloon
where Mainland laws will apply, according to the organisers.
Police estimates turnout at 6,200.

A protester, Mr Wong, is hurt during the scuffles as thousands return
to Civic Square for the first time after the Occupy Protests of 2014,
and some attempts to climb up the flag platform while being stopped
by the security guards. Wong had to be carried off in a ambulance.
Police arrives and standoff with the protesters.
