Deserted Haunted Mansion from 1930s

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted mansion rumoured to be haunted.

The building was completed in the early 1930’s, the first mansion with the swimming pool on this
island. It is a western-oriental style mansion with lots of Greek columns and a pool in the centre.
There is an altar shaped like a diorama. Some bats live there.
About 50 to 60 years ago, a young lady committed suicide by jumping into this pool as her
parents had objected her relationship with her lover. since then, her restless soul still haunts
the mansion and areas around it. The mansion later was purchased by a Wen family. Shortly
after, one of the sons and a maid had fallen into the pool and drowned. The drowned souls
started to haunt the mansion, together with the soul of restless lady previously mentioned.

Deserted Haunted School from 1880s

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted school rumoured to be haunted.

Built in the 1880s, it was initially a 5-storey mansion, located at the city-centre. In 1908, it changed
hand and became a boarding house. It was turned into a hotel in 1910. After the owner went
overseas, it was leased to be a government school.

During World War II, it was used as administrative headquarters by the ruling Japanese military.
Rumours have it that many people were tortured and executed within the building. As a
result, many consider the place 'haunted'. Post-war repairs led to the removal of the top two floors.

Jailed 2019 Protesters Info on Sogo Giant Screen

No Rioters, a video installation by artist Patrick Amadon from Los Angeles, was running on a
70 x 20 metre LED giant screen outside Sogo department store in Causeway Bay as part of a
Art Week 2023 installation by Art Innovation Gallery entitled The Sound of Pixels.

Known as a "digital disobedient" artist, Amadon has hidden the names, ages and jail terms of
convicted Hong Kong protesters of 2019 in the video installation. The red and black, glitchy
video installation, includes a panning surveillance camera.

The title of Amadon’s work appeared to refer to one of the 2019 pro-democracy protest’s
5 demands - demonstrators called on the government to drop their characterisation of
protesters as “rioters.” Those convicted of rioting face up to 10 years' imprisonment.

Amadon said that he wanted to express solidarity with Hongkongers, who were 'doomed to fail
against the resources of the government, yet so many protest and fought back anyway.'
"Don’t want the sacrifices, principles and people who participated to be forgotten."
- the flashes of computer code represented protesters as a “glitch in the government matrix.”

The video, scheduled to play 17-23 March during the Art Week, has been banned
by the Hong Kong government.

An Aggregation Space - Art Central 2023

An Aggregation Space - suspended charcoal by BAHK Seon-ghi, who is renowned for his
suspended installations that create three-dimensional illusions in space. Specially made
for Art Central, the large installation doubles as a maze that welcomes the audience to walk
through it. Its black charcoal parts float precisely in space to form geometric perspectives
at unexpected angles, suggesting an examination of human rationality.

Art Central, one of the anchor events of Hong Kong Art Week, welcomes creative work of 70
galleries and 300 artists in a multicultural celebration of all things art. It opens 22–25 Mar
(Preview 21 Mar) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Trolley Party - Art Basel 2023

Trolley Party - art Installation by Jaffa Lam (8.5 x 9 x 14 m) - made with recycled umbrella
fabric, factory trolley and concrete. It consists of a 14-metre patchwork and 6 trolley
seats, made from materials discarded by the city. Working in close collaboration with
traditional knowledge holders in the Hong Kong textile industry, the artist evokes thinking
around labour and consumerism. By transforming the essence of these recycled materials, she
creates a shelter for audiences to come together, take a seat, and exist in a moment of reprieve.

Jaffa Lam is known for her collaborative, socially-based practice. For over 20 years, she has
worked with marginalized communities in Hong Kong and abroad. Lam received her BFA, MFA
and Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She
specializes in large-scale, site-specific and mixed-media works, often making use of
recycled materials such as crate wood, old furniture, abandoned metal and umbrella fabric.

Art Basel, the lead event of Hong Kong Art Week, showcases creative work of 177
galleries from 32 countries and territories, a significant increase from 130 exhibitors in 2022.

Petition Calls for Donnie Yen's Removal as Oscar Presenter over China Remarks

Action star Donnie Yen has drawn controversy recently for an interview in which he called the
2019 Hong Kong protests a riot.

Over 85,000 has signed the online petition to cancel Donnie Yen as Oscar presenter, started by
"a group of people from Hong Kong", as of 9 March 2023. 15 signed in support in a separate petition.

It says that his latest remarks over protests in Hong Kong in 2019 'violate the spirit of
freedom of speech' and an insult to the 2 million who join a protest march on 16 June 2019.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose voters determine who the Oscars
go to, has not yet commented on the petition.

The petition claims that the Academy's invitation to Yen shows 'contempt for the people of
Hong Kong' and his presence will 'damage the image and reputation of the film industry'.
It has more than 85,000 signatures.

Last Thursday, Yen was named as a presenter for the 95th Academy Awards, which will take
place at in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Yen also asserted that Western media outlets such as the BBC and CNN only focus on
"negative stories" about China.

Yen is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which has
no real legislative power and its members are pro-Beijing people appointed by China.

Gallery of Deserted Art Shutdown by Housing Dept

A refuse collection station in Kwai Chung Estate has doubled as an art gallery after a cleaning
worker started collecting discarded paintings several years ago. The white walls were covered
with paintings, including Western landscape, portraits, calligraphy, children's paintings,
clocks and fans. It was discovered by netizens and their photos were widely circulated
on social media. But it is a pity that although everyone loved it, it was quickly
shutdown by the Housing Department.

The Housing Department said that the refuse station is a place for garbage disposal. It is not
suitable for storing items and must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected from time to time
to maintain a hygienic environment. Therefore, the sundries placed in the refuse station
must be removed. The department was worried that too many people would visit the spot to
take picture and obstruct the workers.

It is ironic that March is the Art Month when the government tries to promote the city as the
art hub of Asia, with major events like Art Basel and Art Central. This gives the impression
that the rich can enjoy their art but not the grassroot citizens.

Update: The paintings were taken down but not sent to the landfill. People are unlikely to
be allowed to go and take pictures in the near future.

Hong Kong's Brave Women Political Prisoners Illuminated

Ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK)
Foundation staged building illuminations in New York City to call attention to Hong Kong’s
women political prisoners.

The projections featured Gwyneth Ho, Alice Wong Yuen-lam, Jessica Chu Wai-ying, Claudia Mo
and Chow Hang-tung, all of whom have been in prison for more than 500 days. These
women, who have courageously fought for Hong Kong’s freedom, don’t belong behind bars.

The illuminations on the occasion of International Women’s Day come amid the ongoing
trial of the Hong Kong 47, the city’s largest-ever National Security Law trial. The projections
took place on 4 March, the eve of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) National People’s Congress
annual session, where Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping is expected
to further consolidate his power.

In conjunction with the illuminations, the CFHK Foundation launched its political
prisoner database featuring women and girls as young as 14 who have been incarcerated.
Hong Kong has the largest percentage of women prisoners in the world.

The CFHK Foundation stands in solidarity with all of Hong Kong’s political prisoners, and urges
the free world to remember the sacrifices they are making and work for their release.

The CFHK Foundation’s President, Mark Clifford, said: ‘Too many women and girls are among
Hong Kong’s nearly 1400 political prisoners. In a free society, the women we highlighted
on our building projections would be celebrated for their achievements, not put behind bars.
Chow Hang-tung is a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Claudia Mo gave up a career in journalism
to become an elected legislator. Gwyneth Ho is a journalist who was beaten in an attack by
a pro-government mob. Members of the U.S. Congress, British Parliament, and all of us throughout
the free world should take the occasion of International Women’s Day to remember the
sacrifices these women – and all of Hong Kong’s political prisoners – are making for
the cause of freedom.’
