Observation Post at Shing Mun Redoubt

The observation post at Shing Mun Redoubt, a complex network of abandoned World War II
tunnels and fortification.

The Shing Mun Redoubt is the heart of the remains of an extensive British military defensive
line used against the Japanese during WWII. Located in the Shing Mun Reservoir area, it
stretches for 18 km loosely tracing the border between Kowloon and the New Territories.

The 'Gin-Drinkers Line' took 2 years to build and fell after just 2 days during the Battle
of Hong Kong in December 1941. The deep defensive tunnels with ventilation shafts and
observation points were named after London streets to make life easier and more familiar
for the British soldiers based there.

Mind Temple by Lauren YS

Mind Temple - Street Art by Lauren YS, American-Chinese artist from Los Angeles, at
Rich View Terrace, Central.

Lauren (IG: @squid.licker) often paints in a bold and rebellious manner – and this one is no different.
Titled ‘Mind Temple’, the mural drew inspiration from two main themes: her twin sister's experience
living and working in Hong Kong and the importance of mental health. Lauren also researched into
the Tai Ping Shan area to incorporate elements that would reflect the mural’s surroundings.

The mural, in its entirety, was created with spray paint, utilising a calming colour palette of
green, blue, and pinkish tones to evoke the scenery of dawn or dusk.

Deserted Most Haunted School

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted school known to be most haunted.

The 2-storey building is designed in a 'U' shape with the hall in the centre. The 2 wings
are classrooms and the open space in the middle is a basketball court. The primary school
was founded in 1931 and moved to the current site in 1974. It was then closed in 1998
due to insufficient enrollment and has been left deserted. There are lots of graffiti.
Part of the building has been entangled by tree roots.

Surrounded by many graves, the school has been selected by the National Geographic Channel
as one of Asia's 10 scariest places. There have been spooky rumours over the years - that the
headmistress, dressed in red, hung herself in the boys' toilet. It was also said that during the
Japanese occupation, massacres were carried out in the area, the bodies were buried in the
hillside and turned into a mass grave.

It has been rented out for a movie set with markings on the wall in 1950s style.

Deserted Theatre from 1920s

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted theatre.

Built in 1926, the 2-storey building was originally a live-theatre commissioned by a prominent
businessman and philanthropist. It hosted live shows such as steamy cabaret acts.

In the 1970s, it became the first cinema to feature sound, bringing it up to international standards.
Chinese movies from the likes of Shaw Brothers formed the main staple, and later Hollywood
films in the 1980s. After the cinema went bust in the wake of the 1987 Wall Street Crash,
the theatre was used as a church until it was finally shuttered in the mid-1990s.

In 2016, it was partially restored into an event space with a main hall can seat 800 or
accommodate 60 banquet tables. This is the section of the theatre that has not
been restored. A derelict van is parked in the courtyard.
